Guardian’s 2025 Absence Management Activity Index & Study, The Employee Leave Experience, shows how employers are rethinking their approach to leave management. Instead of focusing only on the technical side of leave — like outsourcing or centralizing processes — more companies are now looking at the bigger picture: how a positive leave experience impacts employee well-being, engagement, and productivity.

One in three workers who took extended leave in the past two years said it was because of a mental health issue.

During the last few years, how people work and what they expect from their benefits has changed. At the same time, paid family and medical leave (PFML) laws are expanding across the country. Together, these changes are pushing employers to evolve — offering more flexible leave options and better communication to help employees feel supported and stay connected. It’s not just about managing time off. It’s about creating a workplace where people feel seen, valued, and able to bring their best selves to work — even during life’s most challenging moments.
