What is Teledentistry?
Teledentistry is a virtual dental visit allowing you and your dentist to meet safely in real time from almost any location. This may involve actions like sending your dentist a picture or of your mouth, or meeting over video chat. Depending on the nature of your problem, your dentist may be able to evaluate your needs and make a recommendation.
What is Teledentistry best used for?
Teledentistry services are best used for diagnosing an emergency, triaging other dental issues, and prescribing necessary antibiotics when appropriate. Teledentistry cannot, in most cases, deliver definitive care. For services that cannot be postponed, treatment may need to take place in the dentist’s office.
What is considered “emergency dental care?”
Dental emergencies typically include instances of severe mouth, tooth, or jaw pain, bleeding, and/or inflammation.
What do I do if I need emergency care?
Contact your dentist. If you are unable to reach your dentist, you may call the guardian customer service line for a referral.
Can I use Teledentistry for routine dental care?
No. The most important thing you can do for your oral health at this time is to maintain good oral care at home. Remember to brush and floss your teeth twice daily, avoid tobacco use, and eat whole, nutritious foods that help to keep your teeth healthy.
In addition, it is recommended that you reschedule the following types of oral care:
- Regular visits for exams, cleanings and x-rays
- Regular visits for braces
- Removal of teeth that aren’t painful
- Treatment of cavities that aren’t painful
- Tooth whitening
