Retirement isn’t the end. It’s the beginning.
The day you stop working is a brand new stage in life. Ideally, a long and happy one. But to live this new beginning to the fullest, you’ll need income.
In an optimal portfolio that’s part of a retirement plan, you’ll have the benefit of an array of savings and investment strategies. A variable annuity allows you to accumulate tax-deferred savings and then, during the payout period, provides you with the option to start receiving regular payments year after year for your lifetime, or for a specific time period.
You can choose from one of our two types of variable annuities:
Guardian Investor Variable AnnuitiesSM allow you to elect an optional living benefit rider, or add-on feature, called a “guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit,” for an additional fee, at the time you purchase. This feature, which requires you to choose from a select number of investment strategies, provides you with a guaranteed amount of money that you can withdraw annually (when withdrawals stay within the contract guidelines). This amount can grow through the guarantees set by the annuity’s rider, but will never decrease because of market performance.
Guardian Investor ProSeries Variable AnnuitiesSM enable you to invest in the markets through a diverse array of investment options. To help you create an optimal portfolio, the ProSeries Variable Annuities offer more than 30 choices across four distinct strategies, including alternative investments.
You can also choose to add on an income rider (at no additional fee) at purchase. It allows you, after two years of ownership, to turn gains and portions of your initial investment into a guaranteed fixed income stream that is unaffected by the market and accessible at a future date.

Variable Annuities are long-term investment vehicles that involve certain risks, including possible loss of the principal amount invested. The investment return and principal value may fluctuate so that the investment, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than the original cost. Withdrawals of taxable amounts will be subject to ordinary income tax and possible mandatory federal income tax withholding. If taken prior to age 59½, a 10% IRS penalty may also apply. Withdrawals affect the variable annuity’s death benefit, cash surrender value and any optional benefits and may also be subject to a contingent deferred sales charge.
There is no additional tax deferral benefit for annuity contracts purchased in an IRA or other tax-qualified plan, since these are already afforded tax-deferred status. Thus, an annuity should only be purchased in an IRA or qualified plan if you value some of the other features of the annuity and are willing to incur any additional costs associated with the annuity to receive such benefits.
