Christopher Smith leads Group Benefits at Guardian, overseeing a team specializing in helping small businesses (workforces up to 5,000) inspire well-being for employees and their families. Guardian Group Benefits’ solutions are focused on supporting employees’ physical, emotional, and financial health and providing high quality customer experiences at every touchpoint, from enrollment to claims processing and renewal.

Prior to becoming Head of Group Benefits in 2020, Chris served as Senior Vice President and Head of Enterprise Operations and Service, leading insurance operations for new business, policy administration, and customer service across all lines of business.

Previously, Chris served as Executive Vice President and Head of Global Operations for MetLife, where he was responsible for claims, new business and underwriting, policy administration, global shared services, and lean management across all of the company’s markets. During his 25-year career at MetLife, Chris’ roles also included Chief of Staff to MetLife’s Chairman, President, and CEO; Chairman of the Board of the MetLife Foundation; and head of the company’s enterprise strategy group.

Chris serves on the Board of Trustees of Drew University and is an advisor to the Board of Cognito. He previously served on the Board of the Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development (Acord).

Chris earned his Bachelor’s degree in economics from Drew University and an MBA with a concentration in computer and information systems from Rutgers University.
