Disability Insurance Month
What Would You Do
78% of those polled in Guardian’s study, Insurance and Behavior: Spotlight on Individual Disability Insurance, said they would accept a lower salary in order to secure the income protection offered by disability coverage.
More than 30% of the participants in the same survey said they would pay 10% or more of their monthly salary for disability income protection. In reality, individual coverage is closer to 2% of their monthly income and disability insurance through the workplace can be just a few dollars each month.
Americans worry greatly about medical costs, but many individuals and families often forget that an injury or extended illness often means a loss of wages that can make it difficult to make mortgage payments, save for retirement, cover credit card bills, and keep up their children’s tuition. Ironically, a major accident or illness may cost very little in medical bills if an individual has health coverage, yet completely undermine his or her standard of living because of lost income.
