NEW YORK, N.Y., November 30, 2005 — The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) announced the promotion of Joseph A. Caruso to Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary effective January 1, 2006. Mr. Caruso was previously Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary at Guardian. He was appointed to Guardian's Board of Directors in January 2005.
In Mr. Caruso's new role, he will assume additional corporate responsibilities as he continues to serve as Corporate Secretary and Chief of Staff for Guardian's Board of Directors and President and CEO, Dennis J. Manning. Also, the Company's Business Advisory Services (BAS) unit will continue to report to him and the Internal Audit department will continue to report to the President and CEO through him.

Mr. Caruso, an industry veteran, joined the company in 1976 and built a diverse background with management positions in marketing and operations. He has spent more than a decade in ascending leadership roles in the Office of the Corporate Secretary.
In addition to his membership on Guardian's Board of Directors, Mr. Caruso is also a Director or Trustee of various Guardian subsidiaries and affiliated companies including The Guardian Trust Company, FSB, The Guardian Insurance and Annuity Company, Inc., Guardian Investor Services, LLC, Park Avenue Securities, LLC, The Guardian Life Pension Trust, The Guardian Employees' Incentive Savings Plan and First Commonwealth, Inc.
Mr. Caruso is married and resides in New Providence, New Jersey with his wife, Judith, and daughter.
