NEW YORK, November 29, 2004 — Ziff Davis Media's CIO Insight magazine announced today that The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) was named the recipient of the third annual CIO Insight Partners in Alignment Award. Countrywide Financial Corporation and PFPC Worldwide Inc. were also recognized for their efforts in aligning information technology with business strategy.
Presented during CIO Insight's Alignment Award dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Rainbow Room in New York City, the Award recognizes significant inventiveness, collaboration and communication that are required throughout an organization to have a successful business-IT partnership. It is given annually to the company that best meets the publication's selection criteria. In 2003, the winner was Harrah's Entertainment.
'Guardian has done a remarkable job of generating strong returns on their IT investments while achieving their business objectives," said Ellen Pearlman, Editor-in-Chief of CIO Insight. "We applaud Guardian's ability to match its corporate strategy with innovative IT."
Among the IT innovations at Guardian that have brought real bottom line results are the formation of an IT Communications Group to educate business management on the activities and opportunities that better support achieving business value, and an IT Annual Report that helps motivate IT to continually use its capabilities to deliver business results.
"We are honored by this recognition from CIO Insight," said Dennis S. Callahan, Chief Information Officer and Executive Vice President, Guardian. "Our focus on effective communications and running IT as a business have been the linchpins in our ability to partner with our profit centers to deliver more strategic value to internal and external customers at less cost."
A panel of eleven distinguished judges selected by CIO Insight evaluated companies based on a variety of criteria: a clearly articulated business and IT strategy; processes and governance structures that foster alignment; technology investments that accelerate the company's business strategy; metrics that measure financial results; and management practices that encourage a culture of collaboration. The alignment award judges included the following individuals:

Faisal Hoque, Founder and CEO, Enamics Inc.
