George T. Conklin Jr., Former Chairman and CEO of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America Passes Away at Age 90
Served the Company for Nearly 57 Years, and Ushered Guardian into the Computer Age
NEW YORK, N.Y., November 28, 2005 — George T. Conklin Jr., former CEO of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) passed away on November 4, 2005 at the age of 90. Conklin, born in Merrick, NY, joined Guardian in 1939 and was appointed President and CEO in1971. He served the company for nearly fifty-seven years. He became Chairman of the Board in 1977 and led the company until his retirement in 1980. He served on the Board of Directors until 1995.
George Conklin was regarded as a forward-looking executive who led the company into the computer age, advanced economic research and brought new management disciplines to Guardian.
"George Conklin's contributions to Guardian were manifold and his legacy will always be remembered," said Dennis Manning, Guardian's president and CEO. "He led the company into a new and larger world and dynamically upheld Guardian's goal of enriching lives."
A summa cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College, with an MBA from its Tuck School of Business Administration and a Ph.D. in Economics from NYU and another in Finance from Columbia, George Conklin was one of the insurance industry's leading figures.
Conklin also served as an Adjunct Professor of Finance at NYU, and as an officer, President or Chairman of such professional organizations as the Conference of Business Economists, American Economist Society, American Statistical Association, National Bureau of Economic Research and the New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry Association.
He served as a Director at several companies including, Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA/CREF), Hubbard Real Estate Investments, Central Savings Bank, Adelphi University, The Life Insurance Council of New York, Excelsior Bond Fund, Woodlawn Cemetery and The Solomon Brothers Center for Study of Financial Institutions.
He is survived by his widow, Julie Pokorny Conklin; four children, Sandra Conklin-Wright, George T. Conklin III, Heather Conklin Raduazzo, and Holly Conklin Graham; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
