New York, May 01, 2006 — The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) announced that today marks the final four weeks of LEADSM (the Latino Entrepreneurial Award of Distinction) nomination period. Guardian began accepting nominations in January for its national competition, which recognizes and rewards entrepreneurial, community-minded Hispanics between the ages of 12 and 18.
Entries will be accepted through May 31st, 2006. Cash awards will be presented to each winner in their respective communities.
Guardian and LEADSM will award 15 young Latinos a total of $30,000 to be used toward furthering their education and supporting their entrepreneurial pursuits. Three top scholarship prizes of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 and 12 finalist prizes of $1,000 each will be granted. In the interest of promoting greater community service and philanthropy, Guardian will make an additional $250 cash donation in the name of each winner to the individual charity of his or her choice.
Adults are asked to nominate candidates — who could be their daughter, son, niece, nephew, neighbor or student — by submitting a 750 to 1,000 word essay on why the nominee deserves a LEADSM award. A panel of judges will review the essays and pick finalists that:
 | Demonstrate budding entrepreneurship and/or financial acumen; |
 | Have taken the first steps toward financial independence; |
 | Make a difference in their school or community; |
 | Show potential for future success by initiating a new business. |
"The LEADSM award was designed to celebrate the rich legacy of entrepreneurship and community involvement in the Latino community," says Emily Viner, Field Vice President for Guardian. "It is in this spirit that we recognize the next generation of Latino leaders and educate Latino youth about available financial and entrepreneurial."
