NEW YORK, June 29, 2007 — The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) is pleased to announce that Barbara Snyder has been appointed Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary. Snyder joins Guardian from MassMutual Financial Group where she served as Chief Life and Large Corporate Markets Actuary.
As Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary, Snyder works with executive management on a wide range of areas, including risk management, capital management, economic capital, product pricing and design, reserve adequacy, financial reporting, and reinsurance for all Guardian product lines.
"We are very pleased to have Barbara join Guardian in this leadership position," said Bob Broatch, Guardian's Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. "Barbara's financial acumen, leadership skills, and breadth of industry knowledge will be strong assets for Guardian."
Prior to her tenure at MassMutual, Snyder served as senior vice president and product line officer at Mutual of Omaha and chief actuary at Jackson National Life, and held consulting posts with E&Y, Tillinghast, and Lewis & Ellis. She is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, the Society of Actuaries (SOA), and is a regular participant of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.
Guardian also announced that Frank Wander has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Chief Information Officer. In this role, he will be responsible for the delivery of technology-based services and solutions across all Guardian divisions.
Prior to assuming this role, Wander served as Chief Information Officer of Guardian's Group Insurance division, supporting all business systems for their Dental, Medical, Life, and Disability insurance products. Before joining Guardian he was CIO of Prudential Institutional, COO of an Internet start-up, and held leadership roles at Merrill Lynch. He began his career at Equitable.
"Frank Wander is a business-focused systems executive who has a broad range of experience spanning Information Technology, Client Services, Operations, and Management Consulting," said Bob Broatch. "We are confident he will bring the same leadership skills he demonstrated in our Group business to our entire organization."
In addition, Guardian has announced the promotion of Barry Belfer to Senior Vice President, Corporate Finance & Treasurer. In this role, Belfer leads Guardian's treasury function and multiple corporate initiatives relative to overall corporate finances, including merger & acquisition review and analysis, insurance risk management, capital planning and business and financial competitive analysis. He is also responsible for managing the Company's relationships with rating agencies.
Belfer joined Guardian in 2002, and most recently, he served as Vice President, Corporate Finance & Treasurer. He is a member of the Financial Executives Institute (FEI) and the National Association of Corporate Treasurers (NACT).
Guardian also announced the promotion of John Flannigan to Senior Vice President & Corporate Controller. In this role, he is responsible for all financial reporting, State tax compliance and Corporate Procurement. In addition, he is responsible for leading the company's Sarbanes Oxley efforts.
Flannigan has served as Vice President since joining Guardian in 2002. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
