MICHAEL B. CEFOLE JOINS GUARDIAN LIFE AS CFO FOR RETIREMENT SOLUTIONS BUSINESS

NEW YORK, June 15, 2009 — The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) today announced that Michael B. Cefole has joined the company as chief financial officer, Retirement Solutions, Guardian's business unit that provides retirement products and services designed specifically for retail investors and small businesses.

Cefole has more than 20 years of experience in financial services, both in financial and operational leadership roles. He will be responsible for the oversight of all financial functions in Guardian's fast-growing retirement product and services area. He will report to Guardian executive vice president, Retirement Solutions, Scott Dolfi.


"Mike's extensive experience in all aspects of financial management directly supports Guardian's Retirement Solutions business, which encompasses variable annuity and 401K plan offerings designed specifically to meet the needs of retail investors and small businesses," Dolfi said. "Mike is a strategic thinker, adept at tactical execution and problem solving. He will be an invaluable asset as we continue to build our dynamic, high-growth, retirement business. His years of experience as a senior finance executive in the insurance industry make Mike a perfect fit with our experienced team of retirement, insurance and finance industry professionals," Dolfi said.

Cefole joins Guardian after 18 years with Hartford Life Insurance Company where he served in various financial positions, most recently as vice president and director, Capital Management and Strategic Planning. In that role he was responsible for all capital management and strategic planning activities both domestically and internationally for Hartford Life Insurance Company.
Cefole is a graduate of the University of Hartford and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant.
