GUARDIAN RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE, PRODUCTS AND REPUTATION BY INDEPENDENT RESEARCH GROUP

NEW YORK, October 14, 2009 — The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian), one of the largest mutual life insurers and a leading provider of employee and voluntary benefits for small and mid-sized companies, was recently recognized by brokers for its service, products and their sales force according to a study conducted by the independent research firm JHA.
JHA's report revealed that Guardian received "very good to excellent" ratings on all 22 measures used in the evaluation -- the highest possible ratings -- and exceeded or significantly exceeded the industry standard in 16 of the measures. These measures included being easy to work with, overall account management, claims services, sales force stability and uniqueness of disability product offering.
"Guardian's long-tenured field force has strong relationships with brokers and a reputation built on service, knowledge, communication and year-round support," said Barry Petruzzi, 2nd Vice President of Group Life and Disability at Guardian. "We are committed to leveling the playing field for midsize and small business owners to help them compete with larger employers. We are able to achieve this goal by working closely with brokers and offering employers competitive benefits. Our results in the JHA survey are a reflection of this ongoing commitment."
Guardian is gearing up for the fall open enrollment season and continues to enhance its program and service offering for plan-holders, brokers and employees. Enhancements for the 2009 season include recent updates to Guardian's group disability plans with new cost-conscious options that were designed to increase coverage and flexibility, including medical/dental plan benefits that will help disabled employees pay medical and dental premiums in the event of a disability, spousal disability benefits that will assist with expenses associated with the disability of a spouse, and lifetime critical disability benefits that will help ensure benefits continue beyond the maximum duration, if an employee can't return to work.
Most of the brokers in the JHA study indicated that due to the economy the importance of a carrier's financial strength* has increased when recommending a carrier to a client. Guardian is the only major life insurer to earn upgrades from two major rating agencies in 2008. Additionally, four major rating agencies (Fitch, Moody's, Standard and Poor's and A.M. Best) in 2009 affirmed Guardian's ratings with a stable outlook, citing, among other factors, its excellent capitalization and strong enterprise risk management strategy.

According to the latest JHA US Group Disability Market Survey, Guardian is

  • #1 in short-term disability cases sold (traditional and voluntary combined)** over 7,000 cases sold, over 2,800 more than our nearest competitor.
  • #1 in In-force short-term disability cases (traditional and voluntary combined)** over 44,000 cases in force with over 176 million in premium.
  • #2 in long-term disability sold cases (over 5,000 cases sold)**
  • #2 in long-term disability in-force cases (with 24,000+ cases and over $248 million in premium)*
