GUARDIAN LIFE PROMOTES DEANNA M. MULLIGAN TO PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

NEW YORK, October 28, 2010 — The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian), one of the largest mutual life insurers and a leading provider of employee benefits, announced today that its Board of Directors has named Deanna M. Mulligan, 47, to the new role of President and Chief Operating Officer effective November 1, 2010. The Guardian Board further announced its intention to appoint Ms. Mulligan Chief Executive Officer, July 1, 2011 at which time she also will become a Guardian Director.

 

Ms. Mulligan will continue to report to Dennis J. Manning, Guardian’s current President and Chief Executive Officer. Effective November 1, 2010 when Ms. Mulligan becomes President and COO he will assume the role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. With Ms. Mulligan’s appointment to CEO in July 2011 Mr. Manning will remain with Guardian as Executive Chairman until February 1, 2012, his scheduled retirement date.
Ms. Mulligan joined Guardian in July 2008 as Executive Vice President in charge of the company’s Individual Life and Disability business. She has led development of Guardian’s product and business strategy to drive the company’s continued growth in individual life and individual disability products and markets. Among her broad portfolio of responsibilities has been leadership of Guardian’s Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America subsidiary, a leading disability provider in the U.S.

Ms. Mulligan joined Guardian after having run her own consulting firm, advising insurance companies on strategic and operational issues. Earlier in her 25 year career she held the roles of Senior Vice President at New York Life, Executive Vice President at AXA Financial and was a Principal with McKinsey & Company’s New York office.
Ms. Mulligan is on the Board of the Life Insurance Council of New York (LICONY). She has an MBA from Stanford University and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska.
