Brooklyn, NY

On May 31, Guardian volunteers came together at the Gerritsen Beach neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY to help rebuild the homes of local families devastated by Superstorm Sandy.

Guardian worked with theAmerican Red Cross (ARC) to organize the event along with volunteers from New York Cares. Together these volunteers worked throughout the day on a total of four homes in the neighborhood, removing debris, sweeping up dirt, and tearing out rotted floor boards, ceilings, and walls.

Eric and Mary Rasmussen of Noel Avenue in Brooklyn are members of one of the families Guardian assisted at the clean-up. “Four feet of my house was flooded,” said Eric. “We lost all our furniture. We lost all appliances, any electronics, everything that was on the first floor got taken out… We really do appreciate what [Guardian is] doing for us and for everybody in the neighborhood.”
